The four stages behind “AI doesn’t recommend us”
I ask AI and my business never comes up. What is missing?
Short answer
“Not coming up” is not a single problem — it stalls at one of four stages. Acting before you know which one means fixing something that was never the constraint.
The four stages
aitani measures AI visibility in four stages. Until the stage above is satisfied, work on the stage below moves nothing.
- Awareness — does AI know the business exists?
- Category — is it tied to the conditions customers actually use: family-friendly, English spoken, open late?
- Consideration — does it make the shortlist for the question?
- Recommendation — within that shortlist, is it named first or named at all?
The usual mistake is to aim straight at recommendation
More reviews, more articles. Both are worth doing, but pushing on recommendation while awareness and category are empty leaves nothing underneath. AI will not name a business it has no grounds to name.
The other way round, once awareness and category are filled in, recommendation tends to follow. The order matters.
How to find your stage
Write down ten questions a customer would plausibly type, ask each several times with identical wording, and count how often you are named. Zero means awareness or category. A few means consideration. Named every time but low down means recommendation.
The part that matters is keeping the wording fixed and repeating. AI answers vary between runs, so a single result tells you nothing.
